We prefer technology that can be understood, controlled and maintained: open standards, documented interfaces, open-source software and infrastructure that stays under the control of the organisation using it. We apply the same principles to ourselves and avoid unnecessary dependence on large cloud platforms where practical. That's a preference, not a religion — proprietary systems can be the right choice, as long as dependence is a deliberate decision rather than a default.
